Shingles is a painful rash that usually occurs on one side of the body. It is especially common in people over the age of 60. Shingles occurs when chicken pox virus (Herpes zoster), which has been dormant in the body since a childhood episode of chicken pox, reactivates.
A new vaccine, Zostavax, can reduce the risk of developing shingles by about 50%. In addition, if a vaccinated person does get shingles, the duration of the rash is shorter, and the risk of ongoing pain is reduced by 2/3. |
